The Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) will offer two emergency assistance programs for individuals experiencing a loss of income due to the COVID-19 public health emergency: an Emergency Rent Assistance program and an Emergency Mortgage Assistance program.

The Emergency Rent Assistance program aims to assist 30,000 renters who are delinquent on their rent, have lost income due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, and have not received prior COVID-19 related rental assistance. Qualified renters are eligible for up to $5,000 in rental assistance for up to ten months. Only one application per household is allowed and an application is not a guarantee of assistance. If awarded, the funding will be sent to the landlord to cover unpaid rent.

The application period for the Emergency Rental Assistance program begins Monday, August 10, 2020 and continues through Friday, August 21, 2020. Due to anticipated high demand, the application period may close early.

The Emergency Mortgage Assistance program aims to assist homeowners who are delinquent on their mortgage payments, have lost income due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, and have not received prior COVID-19 related housing assistance. Qualified homeowners are eligible for up to $15,000 in mortgage assistance. Only one application per household is allowed and a completed application is not a guarantee of assistance. If awarded, the funding will be sent directly to the loan servicer to cover unpaid mortgage.

The application period for the Emergency Mortgage Assistance program begins Monday, August 24, 2020. Due to anticipated high demand, the application period may close early.
