The Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) has announced an Abandoned Property Program Round Four grant award to the city of Peoria Community Development Department in the amount of $55,000. The funds will be used for demolition of abandoned residential structures in the 61605 zip code in the city of Peoria. Since 2015, the Department has been awarded over $385,000 in IHDA’s Abandoned Property Program funds for demolition. First District Councilwoman Denise Moore said, “the demolition of blighted properties reduces crime and arson, increases the value of surrounding properties, and demonstrates a commitment to make our neighborhoods a better place to live.”

Before each house is demolished, Community Development staff will evaluate the house for the potential of rehabilitation instead of demolition. Most houses that have demolition orders have no plumbing, electrical, or HVAC systems intact. Demolition is a last resort for structures where rehabilitation is not an option.  Houses slated for demolition can harbor criminal activity, in addition to creating a nuisance to neighbors.  The Community Development Department currently has $450,000 budgeted for residential demolitions in the city of Peoria.  The additional funds from IHDA will allow additional blighted properties to be removed.

The Community Development Department works to reduce blight in neighborhoods, protect property values, increase public safety, and encourage neighborhood development. If you notice properties not being maintained in your neighborhood, please submit a complaint through the City of Peoria website or the Peoria Cares Application that is available for iPhones and Androids. You can also call 309.494-CARE. Property maintenance is one simple way to appreciate our neighborhoods and give us all more reasons to appreciate Peoria.
