On Friday, March 23, 2018, the City of Peoria Community Development Department, along with the Neighborhood Services Unit of the Peoria Police Department, launched a new initiative to improve our neighborhoods. This initiative aims to reduce blight in neighborhoods and improve public safety across the City of Peoria by hosting neighborhood sweeps throughout the year in different parts of the City. The first sweep focused on the area surrounding Western Avenue in the south end of Peoria and involved the following groups:
- Code Enforcement
- Parking Enforcement
- Neighborhood Services Unit
- Peoria County Animal Protection Service (PCAPS)
- Peoria Cadet program
- Mayor’s Litter Committee
- Bradley Clean Up Crew
This sweep was about more than just cleaning up the neighborhood; it was about education. However, although the ultimate goal of the neighborhood sweeps is compliance and education, City staff took appropriate enforcement action against habitual offenders who have had previous enforcement action at their property.
